The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.
Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils ... Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

Divergent, Insurgent & Allegiant by Veronica Roth
Wow. This one really creeped up on me! I started reading it because my friend very strongly recommended it to me and the movie is coming out in a few months. At first, I wasn't sure I would like it. It's about Tris in dystopian Chicago, where society is divided into factions, each devoted to a specific virtue. She is from the selfless faction called Abnegation. At 16, she goes through a test and gets to choose if she wants to stay or choose a new faction. She chooses a new one; the Dauntless, who value bravery and must go through initiation, while keeping a secret that could mean life or death.
It's a great novel, full of action and incredible characters. It's so much more than just a dystopian love story, or a story of revolution. I devoured these books and though many hated the ending, I loved it. It may have been a heartbreaking ending, but the way Veronica Roth concluded the series left me feeling completely satisfied and like there was no other possible ending that could have done this series justice. I loved every minute of it and I can not wait to see the movie in 2014!

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare: City of Bones City of Ashes City of Glass City of Fallen Angels City of Lost Souls
What a great series! It's about Clary, who thinks she's a completely ordinary girl, until she sees this boy kill another boy and seems to be the only person who can see them. She quickly discovers the truth: he's a demon hunter, and so is she, that's why she can see them; Shadowhunters and demons. It may be full of clichés, vampires and werwolves, but it's so good! The characters are compelling, there's tons of action and it has a lot of backstory and "complications." I read this series in about 2-3 weeks! I started reading the first book because the movie was coming out and now I'm completely hooked! It's the first series of books in a long time that I'm enthusiastic about and I never want it to end. I honestly can't wait for the last instalment to come out in 2014!
